How to spot a job scam in Singapore

The patterns police keep warning about

• Simple online "tasks" for pay: liking videos, rating hotels or products, "boosting" listings. You earn a little at first, then are asked to pay in to unlock bigger tasks.
• Any fee to start: registration, training, uniform, "refundable deposit" or "activation". A real employer pays you, not the other way round.
• Requests for your Singpass, Singpass OTP, bank log-in or card details. No job needs these to apply. Fake event and concert crew jobs have used this to take over Singpass accounts.
• Pay that is far too good for the work, with no interview and an urgent "start today".
• Being moved off the job site to WhatsApp or Telegram by a "recruiter" you never contacted.
• "Easy money" for receiving and passing on transfers, or for lending your bank account. This is money-mule work, and it is an offence even if you were tricked.
• Anything about crypto, USDT or wallets as part of the job.

A 30-second checklist

If any answer is no, stop and check before you reply.

• Is the company named, and can you find it on its own website or on ACRA?
• Is the salary stated in plain numbers, per hour, day or month?
• Are you applying on a job site or the company’s own page, not via a stranger’s chat?
• Has nobody asked you to pay, or to share Singpass, OTPs or bank details?
• Does the work make sense for the pay?

If something feels off

• Do not pay, and do not share Singpass, OTPs or bank log-ins.
• Call the ScamShield Helpline on 1799, or check at scamshield.gov.sg.
• If you have paid or shared details, call your bank immediately and make a police report.
