About the role
This role sits within the Government Technology Office's Software Engineering Practice, which works to improve how software is built, delivered and maintained across GovTech and the wider public sector. You will combine hands-on engineering with shaping the standards, tools and processes that support the engineering community, working alongside pillar leads and engineering teams. It suits an experienced engineer who enjoys building software as much as working with people to raise engineering standards.
What you'll do
Work with pillar leads, engineering leaders and teams to understand recurring problems and develop solutions usable across the organisation.
Contribute to frameworks, assessment approaches and guidance, making them clear and practical for how teams work.
Design, build and operate products, integrations and automation that make shared practices easier to adopt, such as Backstage features, maturity assessments, measurement tools or interview management workflows.
Work with measurement and platform colleagues to connect existing data, research and tooling, helping teams understand constraints and identify improvements.
Support work on role expectations, hiring, interviewer endorsement and development pathways with partner teams.
Trial approaches with teams, explain how to use them, gather feedback and refine them, assessing success through usefulness and adoption.
Help evaluate how AI tools and agents change engineering workflows, skills and assessment, and apply findings to the Practice's tools, guidance and development approaches.
Take solutions through design, implementation, testing, rollout and ongoing operation, with attention to reliability, security and maintainability.
Share lessons, demonstrate approaches and work with partner teams to align efforts and build on existing capabilities.
Good to know
Your focus may shift between pillars as priorities develop, with a defined area of responsibility alongside wider Practice work.
