About the role

The Straits Times Opinion desk is looking for an experienced editor to help shape national conversation through commentary and public discourse. You will work with a collaborative newsroom team, splitting your time between commissioning opinion pieces and running the daily Forum page. This role suits a sharp, analytical editor with deep knowledge of Singapore and regional affairs who can handle both expert commentary and public letters.

What you'll do

Source, commission and edit op-eds and commentary from external contributors such as academics, policymakers, industry experts and regional correspondents
Refine complex policy, geopolitical and socio-economic arguments into clear, engaging prose while keeping editorial neutrality and accuracy
Build and nurture a diverse network of thought leaders and subject-matter experts across Asia and globally

Use digital publishing analytics to evaluate story performance, inform editorial strategy and optimise content discovery

Package Opinion and Forum content for digital platforms, optimising headlines and visual assets for audience engagement

Review high-volume daily letter submissions from the public and select original, compelling and timely arguments for print and digital publication

Verify claims made by letter writers and ensure all published material complies with Singapore's legal standards

Coordinate with organisations, public agencies and corporate communications teams to publish timely, accurate right-of-reply responses to published Forum letters

Requirements

At least 10 years of experience in journalism, policy analysis or a related field
Proven track record of writing high-quality commentary, long-form analysis or leading coverage at a major news organisation
Deep knowledge across Singaporean affairs, Asian geopolitics or global macroeconomics
Excellent diplomacy and communication skills for engaging high-profile contributors, government agencies and the public
Outstanding command of English with sharp eye for structure, tone, clarity and grammar
Hands-on experience with modern Content Management Systems (CMS), digital analytics platforms (e.g. Chartbeat, Google Analytics) and social media publishing tools
