About the role
Citi's Markets technology group is expanding and needs a technology lead to build high-performance risk calculation systems used in global markets operations. You will guide a team of Java engineers, set technical direction, and take ownership of critical platforms at large scale. This suits an experienced Java lead who enjoys mentoring, architecture and production ownership in financial services.
What you'll do
Lead and mentor a team of Java developers and build a culture of technical ownership
Define the technical vision and architecture for FX risk calculation platforms
Make decisions on system design, technology stack and implementation
Champion best practices in code quality, testing, performance and security
Conduct code reviews and develop team capabilities through feedback
Own systems and features across the full software development life cycle
Drive accountability and ownership within the team
Own the technical roadmap and align it with business objectives
Identify and mitigate risks across the development lifecycle
Design scalable, resilient solutions for complex risk calculation workflows
Lead implementation of distributed systems handling global trade volumes
Optimise application performance and set benchmarks
Design integration patterns with SQL/NoSQL databases and messaging systems
Ensure systems support observability, maintainability and operational excellence
Grow the engineering team through hiring, mentoring and career development
Collaborate with product, business and risk stakeholders
Remove blockers so the team can perform
Lead end-to-end delivery of complex projects
Own production stability and reliability of critical FX risk systems
Establish monitoring, alerting and incident response procedures
Lead L3 production support and join an on-call rotation
Balance technical debt against feature delivery and make trade-off decisions

Requirements
At least 5 years of professional Java development experience
At least 2 years in a technical leadership role such as Tech Lead or Team Lead
Expert knowledge of Core Java and multithreading (JDK 11+)
Proven experience architecting distributed, high-performance systems
Hands-on experience with SQL/NoSQL databases such as Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB or Cassandra
Experience with message queuing systems such as Kafka, Tibco or Solace
