About the role
Join the Centre for Ageing Research and Education at Duke-NUS Medical School as a Research Assistant or Senior Research Assistant on the SEJAHTERA programme, a community-based participatory study with Malay Muslim residents aged 40 and above in Queenstown. You will be based largely on the ground at Happy Village @ Mei Ling, working closely with the Principal Investigator and research staff. This role suits someone who thrives on meeting people and being present in the community.

Build and maintain trust with Malay Muslim residents in Mei Ling and Queenstown through door-knocking, engagement events, and regular presence at community spaces.

Recruit and screen eligible residents for surveys, interviews, Residents' Advisory Groups, focus group discussions, and co-design workshops using convenience and snowball sampling.
Explain the study's purpose, expectations, and value clearly and sensitively, answer questions, and obtain informed consent.
Sustain relationships with residents to support retention and reduce attrition across study waves, watching for community fatigue.
Support the training and day-to-day mentoring of resident Community Connectors, including facilitating the peer buddy system.
Coordinate logistics for fieldwork sessions, Residents' Advisory Groups, and co-design workshops, including scheduling, venue arrangements, and materials preparation.
Conduct ethnographic observations and stakeholder recces to map community assets, resources, and social networks.
Carry out in-depth and go-along interviews and help facilitate focus group discussions and Residents' Advisory Group sessions.
Respond to participants with sensitivity and discretion, using trauma-informed approaches and referring residents to appropriate social or emotional support when needed.
Support transcription, Malay-to-English translation, and organisation of qualitative data in NVivo or equivalent software.
Assist with data checking, verification, and cleaning of quantitative and qualitative data from surveys, interviews, FGDs, and field notes.
Contribute to rapid thematic analysis and prepare materials for team debriefs and community feedback sessions.
Prepare research reports, toolkits, and dissemination materials for academic, community, and policy audiences.
Assist with ad-hoc duties and CARE's broader initiatives and events as assigned by the supervisor.

Occasional evenings or weekend sessions may be needed to accommodate residents' schedules.
The role involves regular presence at the research site in Queenstown, including homes and mosques.

Requirements
Bachelor's Degree for Research Assistant, or Master's Degree with at least 2 years of relevant experience for Research Assistant (Senior), in Social Sciences, Public Health, or related fields such as Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work, or Nursing
Fluency in both English and Malay
Comfortable with fieldwork and face-to-face engagement, including approaching residents and spending extended time in the community, homes, and mosques
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with empathy, patience, and cultural competence when engaging Malay-Muslims, other minorities, vulnerable populations, and community stakeholders
Able to work independently on the ground, exercise good judgement, and adapt to the pace and rhythms of community life
Willing to travel to and be regularly present at the research site in Queenstown, including occasional evenings or weekend sessions
