About the role
Join the Centre for Ageing Research and Education (CARE) at Duke-NUS Medical School to support SEJAHTERA, a community-based participatory research programme working with Malay Muslim residents aged 40 and above in the Queenstown Health District. The role is fieldwork-intensive and community-facing, based at the Happy Village @ Mei Ling community hub, and suits someone who enjoys meeting people and spending time in the community. You will work closely with the Principal Investigator and fellow research staff.
What you'll do
Build and sustain rapport with Malay Muslim residents in Mei Ling / Queenstown through door-knocking, engagement events, and regular presence at community spaces

Recruit and screen eligible residents for surveys, interviews, Residents' Advisory Groups, focus group discussions, and co-design workshops
Explain the study's purpose, expectations, and value to residents, address concerns, and obtain informed consent
Maintain relationships with residents to support retention and reduce attrition across study waves
Support the training and day-to-day mentoring of resident Community Connectors, including the peer buddy system
Coordinate logistics for fieldwork sessions, Residents' Advisory Groups, and co-design workshops, including scheduling, venues, and materials
Conduct ethnographic observations and stakeholder recces to map community assets, resources, and social networks
Conduct in-depth and go-along interviews and support facilitation of focus group discussions and Residents' Advisory Group sessions
Respond to participants with sensitivity and discretion, using trauma-informed approaches and referring residents to support when needed
Support transcription, Malay-to-English translation, and organisation of qualitative data in NVivo or equivalent
Assist with data checking, verification, and cleaning of quantitative and qualitative data
Contribute to rapid thematic analysis and preparation of materials for team debriefs and community feedback sessions
Prepare research reports, toolkits, and dissemination materials for academic, community, and policy audiences
Assist with ad-hoc duties and CARE's broader initiatives and events as assigned
Good to know
Full-time role based at Outram Campus, with regular presence at the research site in Queenstown
Occasional evenings or weekend sessions may be required to accommodate residents' schedules
Travel to and regular presence at the research site is expected
Requirements
Bachelor's Degree for Research Assistant, or Master's Degree with at least 2 years of relevant experience for Research Assistant (Senior), in Social Sciences, Public Health, or related fields
Fluency in both English and Malay
Comfortable with fieldwork and face-to-face engagement, including visiting homes and mosques
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with empathy, patience, and cultural competence
Able to work independently on the ground and adapt to community rhythms
Willing to travel to and be regularly present at the Queenstown research site, including occasional evenings or weekends
