About the role
You will be part of the Food Additive Team within the Food Science Rapid Response Department at the National Centre for Food Science, which supports Singapore's food safety regulation and monitoring. The role involves leading food additive testing, building testing capabilities through method development and research, and carrying out risk assessments for regulatory and outbreak needs. It suits someone with a strong analytical chemistry background who is proactive, self-motivated, and comfortable working both independently and in a team.

Support rapid laboratory response to food safety incidents and emerging issues, including prioritising testing and communicating findings promptly.
Uphold the laboratory quality assurance programme in line with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standards.
Maintain laboratory operational readiness by managing equipment, reagents, reference standards, consumables and other critical resources.
Procure scientific equipment and laboratory supplies based on operational needs, ensuring compliance with financial and procurement requirements.
Serve as an expert witness in court to support prosecution cases related to food safety enforcement.
Develop and enhance analytical capabilities for priority and emerging food additive risks to support regulatory testing, surveillance and incident investigations.
Validate, verify and implement new or improved testing methods, obtain accreditation where required, and troubleshoot analytical methods.
Evaluate and adopt new analytical technologies and approaches to improve laboratory capability, efficiency and scientific robustness.
Strengthen laboratory productivity through automation and digitisation.
Communicate testing outcomes, technical findings and research achievements through technical reports, presentations and scientific publications.
Analyse and interpret data to support policy reviews, national regulatory limit setting and adjustments to food safety programmes.
Conduct dietary exposure and risk assessments of food additives and other relevant chemical hazards.
Review scientific literature, international risk assessments and relevant scientific developments to support food safety assessment and regulatory review.
Review and update food additive regulatory limits to align with international standards and scientific developments.

Requirements
Bachelor of Science degree, preferably with an MSc or PhD, in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science or a related scientific field.
Good knowledge and hands-on experience in analytical method development, sample extraction and cleanup, and instrumental analysis of chemical hazards using techniques such as LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS, LC-HRMS, GC-HRMS.
Knowledge or experience in implementing and maintaining an ISO/IEC 17025:2017 laboratory quality system is beneficial.
Skills in data analytics, digitalisation or applying computational tools to laboratory and scientific work are an advantage.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey scientific and technical information effectively.
Proactive, self-motivated, able to work independently and collaboratively, and willing to take on additional duties when required.
