About the role
This role sits with GovTech, working on software products and services for the Civil Service College. You will design, build, run and keep improving these systems, and the position can be filled at either engineer or senior engineer level depending on your experience and impact. It suits engineers who like owning their work all the way through to production and who are comfortable with some ambiguity.
What you'll do
Design and deliver moderately complex features across multiple components, services or new integrations, considering modularity, scalability, resilience and maintainability
Contribute to solution design and implementation within your team's domain
Evaluate technical options, explain trade-offs and recommend solutions that fit product needs and team goals
Improve existing systems through refactoring and reducing technical debt
Develop and improve automated testing across unit, integration, end-to-end and performance testing
Contribute to automation, observability, CI/CD and deployment practices
Build understanding of product architecture, dependencies and data flows to support sound technical decisions
Take responsibility for your work after deployment, including monitoring, troubleshooting and continuous improvement
Lead or contribute to incident triage and debugging for production issues in your domain
Participate in post-incident reviews, find root causes and propose preventive actions
Ensure monitoring and alerting are in place so issues are caught early
Treat security, compliance, reliability and performance as design constraints
Apply recommended platforms, tools and organisational standards, and escalate when deviations are needed
Use AI-assisted development tools while keeping standards for correctness, security, reliability and maintainability
Write clear technical specifications and design documents that give context for AI-assisted development and other engineers
Critically review AI-generated solutions for technical debt, antipatterns, security risks and incorrect assumptions
For senior engineers, establish team practices for reviewing AI-generated code and deciding what needs human verification
Take end-to-end ownership of projects, including work where requirements may start out ambiguous
Break down problems, prioritise work, identify risks and turn team goals into actionable technical plans
Collaborate with engineers, product teams and other stakeholders
Share knowledge and give constructive technical feedback; senior engineers also mentor and support junior team members
Contribute to improving engineering practices, team effectiveness and technical quality
Good to know
The role may be appointed at Software Engineer or Senior Software Engineer level depending on experience, technical depth and demonstrated scope of impact
Senior engineers are expected to mentor junior team members and help raise engineering standards across the team

Requirements
Strong software engineering fundamentals: system design, testing, version control, CI/CD, observability, security and clean maintainable code
Good engineering judgement: can assess technical approaches, explain trade-offs and defend a position while staying open to better options
Comfort with ambiguity: can turn unclear policy, education, operational or user needs into a practical product and technical solution
Ownership mindset: cares about deployment, production monitoring, user feedback, operational issues and long-term maintainability
Stakeholder collaboration: can communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders, including in sensitive public-sector domains
Responsible AI-assisted development: proficient with AI-assisted tools and able to critically review generated code for correctness, security, maintainability and quality
