About the role
This senior role leads Core Engineering for the public cloud at an international bank, reporting to the Global Head of Cloud Infrastructure. You will be accountable for the performance and reliability of the bank's public cloud platforms, driving automation, cost optimisation and scalability. It suits an experienced cloud engineering leader who can combine deep technical knowledge with people leadership.
What you'll do
Design enterprise-grade cloud landing zones for AWS and Azure, covering identity, networking, security, logging, monitoring, policy, tagging and cost controls
Manage relationships with AWS and Azure
Define processes for cloud management
Lead creation and management of cloud products and services such as standard compute, container, database, storage, network connectivity, observability, secure deployment pipelines, and backup and databunker services

Build, operate and continuously improve global public cloud platforms for secure, standardised, self-service consumption
Ensure services are delivered with automated or self-service day 2 operations, reducing reliance on Cloud Operations
Focus on cloud resource management and build tooling to optimise utilisation of cloud resources globally
Establish reusable platform services, golden patterns, blueprints, reference architectures and engineering guardrails
Drive adoption of platform engineering practices to improve developer productivity, engineering consistency and deployment velocity
Own and maintain the cloud core foundation across AWS and Azure, keeping it efficient, easy to onboard and offboard, and resilient
Be accountable for defining and delivering cloud management processes, including cloud operations and stability, cloud engineering, cloud governance, cloud security, and cloud commissioning and decommissioning
Lead by example, demonstrating technical and people leadership
Build a culture aligned to the bank's values and behaviours, ensuring staff comply with policies and procedures
Empower the workforce while stepping in to course correct when needed
Support diversity, equity and inclusion, and ensure psychological safety
Foster a collaborative, partnership-driven ethos across the function and wider partners
Promote innovation and agile delivery
Ensure the right balance between operations and engineering skills, and promote an engineering culture
Employ, engage, develop and retain high quality people
Own risks linked to delivery of code into production, maintenance of code in production, and dev/test environments and tooling
Drive closure of risks, operational events and audit findings on time, once and done
Educate the team on risk management and continual risk mitigation
Comply with the organisation's risk management framework
Find automated solutions to reduce risk and prevent human and manual solutions
Ensure value determination and realisation for workload migrations to cloud
Ensure compliance with applicable governanc
Requirements
Computer Science or Computer Engineering degree
15+ years of experience in cloud or related technologies
Deep experience with enterprise-scale multi-account AWS and multi-subscription Azure operating models
Strong understanding of AWS and Azure reference architectures, landing zones, control planes, management groups, account structures and cloud-native design principles
Proven ability to define cloud engineering standards aligned to AWS Well-Architected Framework, Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework, Azure Well-Architected Framework, enterprise architecture principles, and security and regulatory requirements
