About the role
This role supports health, safety and environment (HSE) work on facility and construction projects, with a focus on safety in design. You will review design documentation, run risk workshops and help project teams meet safety codes and standards. It suits someone with a few years of HSE or engineering experience who is comfortable reading technical drawings and working with many different stakeholders.
What you'll do
Review architectural drawings, specifications, engineering drawings, layouts, elevations and life safety plans at concept, design development and construction documentation stages.
Apply Safety in Design principles and the Hierarchy of Controls to remove or reduce hazards during design.
Put hazard elimination, substitution and engineering controls ahead of administrative controls and PPE.
Assess designs for safety across construction, installation, commissioning, operations, maintenance and demolition.
Lead or take part in multidisciplinary hazard identification and risk assessment exercises.
Run workshops with architects, engineers, contractors, maintenance staff and end-users.
Check that facility and equipment designs meet relevant local, regional, national and international codes and standards, including OSHA, NFPA, IBC and ADA.
Support regional HSE programmes, standards, procedures and governance.
Track Safety in Design performance metrics and project outcomes, and recommend improvements to design standards and guidelines.
Analyse injury, illness and incident trends to strengthen risk controls.
Coordinate safety review activities and manage safety-related tasks to meet project schedules.
Integrate safety across mechanical, electrical, occupational hygiene, process safety, and materials and chemical safety disciplines.
Provide safety oversight during commissioning, startup and handover, and document risk information for operations and maintenance teams.
Explain complex technical HSE requirements clearly to stakeholders, clients and operational teams.
Good to know
Travel of about 20% to 25% domestically and internationally for project reviews, site inspections, commissioning support and stakeholder engagement.

Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, Construction Management, Science or a related field preferred; equivalent education and experience considered
Minimum 2 to 5 years of relevant experience
Able to read and interpret architectural, engineering and construction drawings, specifications and scope documents with a safety focus
Experience in hazard identification, risk assessment and control measures
Understanding of engineering design and construction processes
Knowledge of OSHA requirements, safety legislation and building/fire safety codes such as NFPA, IBC and ADA
