About the role
This role sits with the Digital Excellence & Products Division at the Ministry of Education, where you will lead design craft and user research for student-facing digital products such as the Student Learning Space. You will work across the wider student product portfolio and collaborate with teacher and parent domains, so the experiences feel joined up. It suits a senior designer who enjoys setting a high bar for craft and building design practice in a team that is still growing.
What you'll do
Set and maintain high design quality across the student product portfolio, covering interaction design, visual design, information architecture and accessibility
Design user flows, wireframes and high-fidelity prototypes that balance usability, learning outcomes and technical feasibility
Contribute to shared design patterns and components so student products stay consistent with teacher and parent domains
Produce design specifications that support smooth implementation, with attention to how content and UI interact in learning contexts
Lead user research with students and teachers to understand how digital tools help or hinder learning
Map end-to-end learning journeys using qualitative research and behavioural data to identify design opportunities
Run usability testing and iterate based on evidence, working across teacher and parent missions to keep the ecosystem coherent
Establish design rituals, critique processes and quality standards for the student mission design team
Mentor and support designers through hands-on feedback, design reviews and knowledge sharing
Contribute to the wider DXD design community, shared standards and cross-mission alignment
Work closely with product managers, curriculum specialists and developers to align user needs, learning outcomes and delivery timelines
Facilitate workshops and co-design sessions with educators and domain experts, and explain design decisions clearly

In the first 6 to 12 months you will lead design of key student-facing experiences and run discovery work
Reports to the Design Manager
Works with product managers, curriculum specialists, developers, designers across teacher and parent missions, and the DXD design community

Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Education Technology or a related field
At least 10 years of experience in UX design, product design or interaction design
Strong portfolio showing craft quality, design thinking and delivery of complex products
Strong interaction design, visual design and prototyping skills for complex digital products
Sensitivity to accessibility and content-heavy interfaces
Ability to handle pixel-level detail and cross-product coherence at the same time
