About the role
The Environmental Health Institute is hiring a researcher for the Arthropod Ecology Section under the Vector Surveillance and Ecology Department. The team studies mosquitoes and other medically important arthropods, combining classical taxonomy with molecular methods to support national public-health surveillance and preparedness. This suits an experienced scientist who can lead studies, mentor others and work across field and laboratory settings.
What you'll do
Design and run field and laboratory studies on mosquitoes and other medically important arthropods, from framing research questions through to analysing, interpreting and publishing results.
Study the diversity, distribution, abundance and ecology of these arthropods, applying morphological and molecular methods for species identification and characterisation.
Set up and maintain laboratory colonies of mosquitoes and other biting arthropods to support biological and ecological research.
Use molecular techniques such as next-generation sequencing and bioinformatic analysis to detect, characterise and discover arthropod-associated pathogens and assess their public-health importance.
Bring together ecological, taxonomic, molecular and pathogen evidence to inform surveillance, risk assessment and preparedness.
Mentor junior researchers, help shape research priorities and capability development, collaborate with local and international partners, and communicate findings.
Good to know
Based at NEA-HQ-Environment Building.
Weekend or after-office-hours work may be needed for field surveillance, specimen collection or other time-sensitive activities.

Experience in at least one relevant area such as arthropod ecology and field surveillance, arthropod colonisation, molecular biology and pathogen detection, NGS and bioinformatics, or ecological and geospatial analysis
Arthropod taxonomy experience is highly valued, including morphological identification, taxonomic keys, reference collections or DNA barcoding
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, able to evaluate evidence and reach defensible conclusions
Able to work independently and collaboratively with research institutions, government agencies and other partners
Benefits
Opportunities to develop and lead research and build new scientific capabilities
Collaboration with researchers and public-health professionals in Singapore and internationally
